Kayla smiled as she sat in the passenger seat and stared at the Route 66 Christmas ornament that hung from the rearview mirror. This would be her first trip with Big Tiny, even if he was still the size of a peanut. As Bobby drove west, Kayla’s pulse raced; she hadn’t broken the news to him yet. Outside Needles, Bobby was fumbling with the radio when an animal darted into the road. Kayla screamed, but Bobby swerved and blessedly missed it. Afterward, she clutched her stomach as her heart pounded. Finally, she turned to Bobby and said, “Thank you, Daddy.”
