Iron Spine

When I was young,

my iron spine

gleamed as I stood

in the stream

and resisted the current.

Time passed,

and I still stand

but the current pushes

harder and the shine

has gone off the metal.

When I am old,

I wonder, will my iron spine

have curved and rusted

or will I remain straight and tall

as the ceaseless water rushes on?
