Invincible, Northern California 1967

As Anjelica and Tommy sped up the coast in the turquoise Mustang convertible, the ocean rolled by glittering in the afternoon sun. Anjelica stretched her arms overhead and dipped her wrists in time with the waves. Her mother’s angry words echoed in her head: he’ll leave you, you’ll be back. But as Anjelica turned and faced Tommy, recognized the familiar steely look of resolve, his jaw set, she knew she’d made the right choice. Young and in love would always triumph over old and bitter. With their high school diplomas and each other, they were destined to rule the world.
