Homecoming

Katie clenched her jaw as she stared at her old house. Its windows smiled like broken teeth, and a plywood front door stood eerily ajar. How many decades ago had the plant closed? As they’d driven away, her mother had cried while her father had quietly cursed the city that’d shattered their dreams. Katie had vowed to return; thanks to the Land Bank, the house was hers.

Katie narrowed her eyes. With her parents gone, she would rebuild her life in a familiar place. She’d refurbish the house to honor her parents and a city trying to do the same.
